How to be an Electronic Engineer

working in the oil industry

Studying to be an Electronic Engineer

Before we start to talk about Electronic Engineers, we should clarify that there is a difference between the following

  1. An Electrician
  2. Electrical Engineer
  3. Electronic Engineer
These three jobs are quite different, both the way you become one and what you do as part of your daily business. An Electrician normally does an apprenticeship which last between 3 and 4 years. Here you will learn about wiring houses, socks and other every day electrical items. To be an Electrical Engineer you will need to study after your leaving cert for up to 4 years in a University or an IT (Institute of Technology). Electrical Engineers typically work on design of electrical systems which are greater than 1 Ampere. This means that things from washing machines to wind turbines are of interest to an Electrical Engineer.
