[...] Just as we mentioned here only 12 days ago, Motorola in Cork are facing some tough decisions. 350 more Cork jobs lie in the balance after a meeting at Motorola’s (www.motorola.com) plant in Mahon, Cork. The company has announced, at a meeting yesterday morning, that they will consider closing the plant. “Motorola has today informed its employees at its Cork facility of its intention to enter an employee consultation process regarding the future of the site as soon as possible” said a company spokesperson. “Motorola is considering a proposal to cease all engineering functions carried out at the site. If this proposal was to be confirmed, it would result in the vast majority of employees at the site being at risk of redundancy and could make the site unsustainable as a Motorola facility. Last year 90 workers were left go from the plant. Motorola make software for mobile phones and PDA’s at their plant in Cork since 1992. The Motorola Cork facility is a Software Development Centre and it employs many of the type of workers that local TD, Micheál Martin T.D., Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, refers to as “high calibre jobs” or “high value jobs“.
